Yes, fiber friends, vacation constipation is very real. Even for those of us who are regular. Read on to learn why you get backed up and what you can do about it.
What is Constipation?
It’s when you can’t poop. Constipation is a common digestive problem that happens when you have difficulty passing stools or have infrequent bowel movements. Think hard, dry poop pellets that are hard to pass. It often includes bloating, abdominal pain, and a feeling that something is left over after going number two.
Where Does Vacation Constipation Happen
There are a number of reasons why you could be constipated on vacation.
The Plane
Turns out your colon can dry out while end route to your fabulous vacation getaway.
Why does this happen? During the flight, you will probably be in your seat for a long period of time. Prolonged sitting can slow down your bowel movements, and cause the colon to absorb too much water leading to dry lumpy stools and constipation. (Thumbs down.)
If you can, get up and walk in the aisles to get blood flowing. (If you are in a car, take driving breaks to get the blood circulating.)
Dehydration
You are not drinking enough water. While in vacation mode you may be going to the beach all day or are busy seeing all the local sights. Sadly, your water intake may suffer. If you have a water bottle with you, look at you, but most of us are probably not staying hydrated throughout the vacation day.
Not Enough Fiber
You know we love the benefits of a high-fiber diet. It’s also possible your diet may be a vacation mode which means less fiber than usual. We have a full guide on which fiber-rich foods to eat here.
Different Time Zone
For those venturing a little farther from home, traveling across different time zones can disrupt your body’s internal clock and affect your bowel movement patterns.
New Surroundings
You are in a new living space with a new toilet in a different location. It can take some time for your colon to get used to the new surroundings and new toilets. Your colon can be shy.
Stress
Hopefully, you are not stressed when you are at your vacation destination but getting there and back could be stressful. Travel delays are all too common and can cause stress. That worry can back you up.
How Do I Poop on Vacation?
To help prevent constipation during your vacation, consider the following:
Water, water, and more water. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Get your fiber in! Look to add fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your meals.
Try your best to maintain a regular eating and sleeping schedule though we know that is hard.
Get moving. Stretch or walk to engage in some physical activity.
If you feel the urge, go. Don’t put off going to the restroom.
If constipation persists or becomes severe while away, seek medical attention immediately to rule out any underlying health issues.
